UN Plastic Treaty negotiations: Call to all Seaweed Packaging Companies

Apr 21, 2023 | Roundtable

We are pleased to invite all Seaweed Packaging Companies to attend the “Seaweed as a Sustainable and Biodegradable Alternative to Plastic Packaging” meeting, taking place on the 1st of June from 11:00 to 13:00 CET (TBC) in Paris, France (location to be confirmed). The meeting is co-hosted by our Coalition, UN Global Compact and UNEP, along with seaweed packaging producers. The meeting aims to leverage the UN Plastic Treaty negotiations process (INC-2) in Paris in May, and to bring together relevant stakeholders to showcase the potential of seaweed as a nature-based solution for plastic alternatives. The session will feature a keynote speech on the potential of seaweed, followed by a panel discussion with experts from the UN organisations, academia, and seaweed producers. The panel will focus on the comparison of seaweed as a natural alternative to other sources of bioplastics, showcasing existing seaweed packaging solutions, and identifying bottlenecks and opportunities for the adoption of seaweed packaging. We believe that your participation in this event will be beneficial to all stakeholders and we look forward to welcoming you to the meeting.

The outcome of the event would be to provide formal recommendations and an input paper for the next UN Plastic Treaty negotiations (INC-3) during UNEA in Nairobi in February 2024, to be considered by the Member States to include in the legally binding instrument on plastic pollution itself.

Please RSVP to sofya@oceanstewardshipcoalition.org if you are interested in attending the session in-person, and register here. We would love to see you there!

Moreover, we will be hosting a planning session online in the first/second week of May, and we welcome you to join as well. Please send a follow-up email if you are interested in contributing to this work.
