Global Seaweed Coalition secures critical funding to continue its operations

Oct 20, 2025 | Press Release

The Global Seaweed Coalition (GSC) is proud to announce it has secured two years of funding to continue its operations, enabling GSC to maintain its role in promoting the safe and sustainable development of the global seaweed sector. This crucial support is provided through a grant from Builders Vision, a team of investors and philanthropists accelerating promising solutions across food & agriculture, energy and oceans. The funding will support the GSC’s efforts to expand sustainable seaweed farming, build international partnerships and raise awareness of seaweed’s potential to strengthen food systems, mitigate climate change and build resilience.

“This support from Builders Vision comes at a critical transition moment for the GSC,” noted Dr. Philippe Potin, Senior Researcher at the French National Research Center with over 35 years of seaweed expertise and GSC Scientific Director and co-founder. “The Coalition will use this funding to keep building the scientific foundation of the seaweed sector, supporting critical work in biosecurity and genetic resource management while facilitating knowledge exchanges.”

“We are proud to partner with the GSC as they work to scale sustainable seaweed farming globally, a transformative effort that aims to restore ocean ecosystems, produce nutritious food and create innovative opportunities to grow the blue economy,” said Laura Rodriguez, Senior Program Officer of Oceans at Builders Vision. “By championing seaweed solutions, the GSC is helping accelerate the growth of the sector, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient future for our oceans and beyond.”

The Coalition will continue raising global awareness of seaweed’s potential and engaging in policy frameworks at local, national and international levels. “This crucial funding comes as the Coalition is reaching a significant milestone with the launch of the United Nations Global Seaweed Initiative (UNGSI), which GSC has developed in collaboration with government representatives and partners from UN agencies,” said Vincent Doumeizel, Senior Advisor at the UN Global Compact and GSC co-founder. “It will broaden the scope of global collaboration, bring countries directly into the conversation and help tap into the expertise of different UN entities to the seaweed field.”

This support allows GSC to maintain a core team and workstreams. Yet, it represents only a portion of what is needed to fully deliver on GSC’s mission. The Coalition will continue seeking additional funding for targeted calls for proposals to provide crucial seed funding for community-based and high-impact projects and to bring its staffing up to full complement.

The Global Seaweed Coalition continues to welcome new members and partnerships as it works toward its vision of a thriving, safe and sustainable seaweed sector that benefits communities, economies and the environment.
